Hit a Good Serve
Start the Point Right

From About.com

Every badminton point begins with a serve. When it's your turn, be sure to serve well and start the point going in the right direction.

There are some basic rules about your racquet position and the position of the shuttle that you need to comply with (i.e., the shuttle must be below your waist). Once you understand these rules, you can learn the four basic types of serves, and get on court to practice them.

If you're a visual learner, here's what it looks like to hit the flick serve.
