Racquetball Defense - The Ceiling Ball is the Best Racquetball Defense

How to Use the Ceiling Ball to Strengthen Your Racquetball Defense

By Stephen Hufford, About.com

When you're under pressure from a hard-hitting opponent, it can be difficult to get back into position and execute your offensive shots. Here are three quick tips for employing the ceiling ball as part of your racquetball defense:
  • aim your shot so that it will hit the ceiling about five or six feet in front of the front wall, and hit your shot with medium pace
  • aim your shot so that it will travel along a side wall, and reasonably close to it, yet not make any contact with the side wall
  • pace your shot so that the ball grazes the base of the back wall as it descends toward its second bounce, makes its second bounce just in front of the back wall, or, best yet, bounces its second time right in the crack between the floor and back wall.
This ceiling ball shot will give you plenty of time to recover good court position. The flight of the ball during this shot takes a lot of time! From the point where the ball hits the ceiling, the ball not only travels the full length of the court (front to back), but also thrice travels almost the full height of the court. That lengthy trajectory consumes a lot of time.

If you hit this shot with only medium pace, you'll surely have the time you need to switch from racquetball defense to racquetball offense!
