Backhand Short Rail Drill - Take Racquet Head Up, Begin to Step Towards Ball

Watch the Ball Descend, Get Your Racquet Back and Up, and Begin to Transfer Your Weight by Stepping Toward the Ball

Steve Hufford
As the ball descends from the side wall, you should take your racquet fully back, and position the racquet almost perpendicular to the floor (the head of the racquet should be the highest part of the racquet). Also, as the ball descends, you can begin to gauge the likely bounce and begin to take a step of the appropriate size. (in this case, the striker first took a small step backwards with the left foot to create more room for a full subsequent step with the right foot.)
