Backhand Short Rail Drill - Make Contact at Sock Height

Make Contact When the Ball is Even With Your Front Foot, Roughly at Sock Height [Note That Ball and Right Foot Are Both Directly Above Red Line]

Steve Hufford
Watch the ball closely, and hit it after it bounces and descends to roughly sock height. Hit the ball when it is directly between your leading foot (right foot in this picture) and the side wall. The striker's right foot and the ball are both directly above the red-lined front edge of the service box. That positioning of the ball relative to your body makes it easy to hit the ball straight.
